About the City

Westphalia, MO – a town platted and founded in 1835. It is a small rural town located within Osage County, on a hill above Maries Creek. Westphalian early settlers are known to have had a rich German Catholic heritage, coming from the Westphalia region of Germany, hence the town’s name. Many buildings and homes within the town are influenced by German architecture, including notably, the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, built in 1848, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Still today, the city streets are denoted with both English and German names. Westphalia is nicknamed as the “Pearl of Osage County”.

The City of Westphalia was incorporated in the state of Missouri as a city and municipality in 1905. It was established as a 4th class city and continues to operate as such to this day. The City Hall building is an iconic limestone building located at 116 East Main Street. The City Council includes a Mayor seat and a Board of Aldermen comprised of 4 seats. Members of the Council are elected for 2 year terms. The City of Westphalia adopted a Planning and Zoning Code in 2002. A city public sewer system followed shortly after establishing itself in 2005.
